One Choice can Really Change a Person

Author’s Note:  This is a character development piece that is on the short story “Every Soul a Star”.  I am going to analyze one of the main characters Bree.  In this writing piece, I am going to analyze how Bree changes from the beginning to end.  In this reading response, I am going to work on varying the length of my sentences and the format of this kind of writing.

In the beginning of “Every Soul a Star” by Wendy Mass,  Bree is a beautiful and popular teenage girl who only cares about herself.   She  always has had a dream of becoming a model  for a major magazine franchise. Bree  and her other friends have this dream too, but Bree does not care about them that much because she thinks that they don’t have any shot at making it in the business of modeling, for the reason that they are not as pretty as she is.  Her parents object to this idea because they are astronomers,  they want her to pursuit their career instead of modeling.  Bree’s modeling life is put on hold when her parents decide to move to the Moon Shadow Campground  so they can continue their careers.  There Bree will find out who she really is without a phone and beauty salons.

Bree had zero motive to move up to the  Moon Shadow Campground.   The author says  “it is almost like a jail sentence”.   She did not even want to talk to her parent because she was furious with them.  But after a few days Bree got used to living at the  Moon Shadow Campground and she finally talked to her parents, plus she has met a few new friends such as the current camp owners daughter  Ally and a friend of hers Jack.  They talked with her and gave her tips on how to survive out in this area.  Bree’s outer appearance changed a lot from the beginning to now  because her luggage got lost in the mail so Bree had to wear some of Ally’s gross cloths.  The author describes Ally’s cloths by saying “ all Ally has are these faded shirts and jeans with lots of holes”.

In the end of the story, Bree’s complete picture of life had changed.  Before moving it was all about me, but now she listens to people and is a caring.  The author states this in the story by saying “she stops and thinks about what she is going to say before she says it, plus she is a better listener than before”. Also she stopped wearing make-up on her face so people could see who she really is.  Ally and Jack noticed a complete change in her too from the time she arrived at Moon Shadow to the end.  When she arrived at the campground she was a lonely girl who did not want to be where she is, and she changed into loving this place and being more interested in astronomy.   Sometimes it is who you are around that changes you, that is certainly what changed Bree.

I can make a connection between Bree and the main character in “The Hunger Games”, Katniss Everdeen, because Katniss was a self-centered person before her sister was picked to go into the games at the reaping.  The games changed her because she got a good picture on how lucky she is to be living.  Just as Bree met some friends, Katniss met some allies such as Rue, Peeta and Haymitch.  Haymitch was the one who  guided Katniss just as Jack and Ally guided Bree.  After co-winning the games, she came out as a different person.  Katniss was nicer, wiser and thought about others too, these characteristics are common in both Bree and Katniss.

What we notice in the story is how Bree changes in all forms of LATE.  But what was most appealing was  her change of attitude from the beginning to the end.   She was very negative about moving to the Moon Shadow Campground, but after living there for some time and meeting new friends she grew to like it.  Sometimes it really does matter who you are around, especially because when Bree was around Ally and Jack, she acted different and learned things from both of them.  Anyone can change, but you have to put your mind into it, and that is what Bree did.
