Mistakes Truly can Lead to Change

Author’s Note:  This writing piece is on the conflict and resolution of  Touching Spirit Bear.  I am going to analyze the conflict in the story and what the resolution of the story.  I am going to focus on be format of this kind of writing.

Many people in the town of Drake dislike Cole Mathews.  In fact, most would consider him the biggest bully in the entire town.   Cole is someone who you do not want to mess with.  But when Cole robbed a store and no one found out, Cole told his friends what he did.  Peter Driscal overheard what happened and told on him.  Once Cole found out, he smashed Peter’s skull into the cement.   Cole was then sent off to a jail where eventually,  people joined a group that tried to help him heal.  When they could not decide what kind of punishment he should receive,  Gravy suggested that he goes to an island for a year as a form of healing.

While on the island, Cole had a lot of time to think about all of the wrong that he has committed in his life.  He did different activities such as going to the pond everyday to soak and carry a rock up a large hill and role it down.  One day, Cole thought about having Peter come to the island to see what life was like for him.  Originally Gravy and Edwin turned  the thought down, but they eventually came to the conclusion with Peter’s parents that that was what was best for Peter.  When Peter arrives, he is still very scared of Cole.  In fact, it is like that for about two weeks before Peter actually says something to him.  From then on, they are sort of getting along but still to not wanting to come to the since of being friends.   The resolution of the story is that eventually Peter gains Cole’s trust by going to the pond to soak, carrying the rock and being able to carve on a totem pole.  Also, Cole gives Peter "at.óow," a blanket which symbolizes friendship and trust.

If Cole was never beaten by his dad, none of this would have ever happened.  Today we rely on our parents to help us and guide us through the tough decisions during childhood.  We look up to our parents, and if they make bad decisions; guess what we do, we make bad decisions.  Our parents influence us in so many ways. So if Cole did not have had a  bad influence in his household , then he might have been a good kid.
